On Relationships

Relationships are part of humans' ingenious and innate mechanism for healing. To find or remain in connection with the Other, we do the work we might not otherwise do, and this is the medicine, ultimately mending our relationship with ourselves. Relationships can ultimately make us better, happier people, if we know how to recognize patterns and ultimately transcend them.

The first thing lost in intimate relationship is often the feeling of being seen and heard, revealing layers of isolation, abandonment, shut-down, anger or despair within each of us.

Approach to Mending

In relationship counselling, I start with Seen and Heard, and we go from there in a co-created process, unique to each relationship. We may use word sketches to identify and explore patterns and core foundations; communication and clearing processes to build awareness, compassion, and new skills to maintain connection through challenging times. Tools for working with intense emotions, understanding and working with the effects of trauma can also be part of the process of clearing and reconnection. Our deepest struggles are often part of a greater lineage in each family system and very much shared with our predecessors.

Therapeutic sessions hold space for the truth of each person, the relationship as a whole, and the legacy of the family system that is being represented and re-lived. From this birds eye view, we can navigate the way ahead, with ultimate compassion, curiosity and authenticity.

Background + Training

Prior to formal, evidence-based training in applied counselling psychology, Jude Wong spent the better part of a decade immersed in a variety of therapeutic, indigenous, community and arts-based practices for healing: The intergenerational perspective of Systemic Family Constellations; the simple, effective, language of Compassionate / Non-Violent Communication (CNVC); the transformative group process of The Way of Council; and the integrated, heart-opening approach of Heart Centred Therapies for recovery from personal and collective trauma.

In her earliest days of personal development, Jude also spent several years in the 12-step programs of Codependents Anonymous (CODA) and Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families (ACADF). In these rooms, she experienced how connected each of our stories are, while identifying healthy and unhealthy communication and relationship patterns, developing considerable depth in how these are formed and passed down the family lines.

Professional Designation

Currently, Jude is accumulating hours towards full designation as a Registered Professional Counsellor, with the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association. While completing her professional training at the well-respected Kelowna College of Professional Counselling, Jude also trained and served as a lay counsellor for 4 years at the Cowichan Family Life Association. In 2020, she completed certification in Heart-Centred Therapies at The Wellness Institute, based in Washington, USA.

In addition to interning with Shore, Jude runs a part-time practice in Duncan, called Open Session Space, offering integrated person-centred counselling from a systemic, trauma-informed perspective as well as Heart-Centred Hypnotherapy, an integrated form of this ancient practice, to resolve existential issues, early childhood trauma and shock.

Intake Process, Coverage, and Availability

INTAKE PROCESS:

Couples can begin with a 1-hour First Consult for a flat fee of $50, to meet for the first time and determine if Jude is a good fit for you. Once this is determined, both partners  would then complete an online intake, which takes about 20 minutes. A 1.5-hour First Session is then required before beginning on-going therapy sessions.

FEES + COVERAGE:

Jude's fees are unfortunately not covered by insurance plans until she becomes fully certified.

However, while she is still interning, she offers a Sliding Scale fee schedule:

$100-125/hr for couples

$80-110/hr for individuals

Sliding Scale means that you select the rate you pay, within the given range, in proportion to your financial position at this time. All fees include GST and are due the day of each session, payable by e-Transfer, Cash, or Credit.

AVAILABILITY:

Jude is available in the afternoons and evenings only, online most days and in person on Fridays and Saturdays at Shore's Head Office in Harewood -- 353 Seventh Street, Nanaimo.

Acknowledgement + Commitment to Reconciliation

I acknowledge the privilege it is to reside and practice here on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples and the tragic and unresolved legacies of oppression and cultural annihilation that exist here. This is a history we all must reconcile and recover from. I remain committed to working compassionately towards reconciliation, personal and collective recovery from racial segregation, dominant and polarizing cultural norms, practices, systems, and values.
